We’re expats, just like you.

Being an expat in the Algarve, we experience Portugal every day as an amazing country. We have the most fulfilling encounters every day and we enjoy the friendliness of the Portuguese people. We also learned that despite many lessons, the Portuguese language can be an issue. Especially in a crisis situation, connecting in Portuguese can be stressful and speaking your mother tongue is helpful and lowers the stress. Medical issues can happen every day, even in the Algarve. From a broken hip to a broken tooth and from selecting the best medical insurance to selecting the right pharmacist; finding a specialist is always a challenge.

I experienced it myself

Last year, my partner suddenly had medical problems. These problems lead to severe pains, so intense that he could not sleep or sit. Serious stuff. We were quite panicky and did not know who to go to or where to ask. It was the start of a long search for the right doctors, neurologists, ophthalmologists, rheumatologist etc. A search in the public system, in the private system and all over the Algarve, from East to West. Luckily his situation is much better now. But I remember the intense feeling of loneliness, not knowing where to go. All of a sudden, the Algarve felt not so comfortable. A reliable inventory of doctors and specialists would have helped a lot. And so The Good Guide Algarve was born.
